Mice homozygous for a null allele exhibit smaller birth size, growth retardation, postnatal lethality, bowel obstructions, altered blood chemistry, acidosis, spleen defects and defects in ion homeostasis. Heterozygotes have decreased levels of circulating bicarbonate.
