Homozygous null mice are hyperglycemic with hypoinsulinemia and die within 2-3 weeks of life displaying increased plasma levels of glucagon, free fatty acids and beta-hydroxybutyrate, abnormal glucose tolerance, and altered postnatal development of pancreatic islets.
