Homozygous inactivation of this gene leads to lack of ureteric bud induction, bilateral renal agenesis, absence of enteric neurons, and neonatal death. Heterozygotes show renal phenotypes ranging from two small kidneys, often with abnormal shapes and cortical cysts, to unilateral renal agenesis.
