Homozygotes for one null allele show reduced cysteine levels and increased cellular sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide. Homozygotes for another null allele show increased sensitivity to induced hepatotoxicity and neurotoxicity, and ovarian oxidative stress and accelerated ovarian failure in females.
