Homozygous mutation of this gene results in impaired development of neuroendocrine cell lineages in the hypothalamus and of diencephalic dopaminergic neurons. Mice homozygous for a certain point mutation die around birth. Heterozygosity causes obesity with increased lean and body fat mass, hyperlipidemia, hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance and impaired glucose tolerance.
