Homozygotes for a null allele exhibit partial postnatal lethality, susceptibility to induced acute hemolysis, and altered renal iron loading during aging and after ischemic injury. Homozygotes for a knock-in allele show reduced cholesterol efflux and enhanced nephropathy in STZ-induced diabetes.
