Mice homozygous for one null allele are protected from the hyperinsulinemia, hyperglycemia, glucose intolerance, hepatic steatosis and hypertriglyceridemia induced by a high-fat diet, and show better glucose tolerance as they age. Mice homozygous for another null allele show improved social memory.
