Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit weight loss, absent subcutaneous fat tissue, severe mtDNA depletion and mitochondrial dysfunction in the liver with signs of oxidative stress, liver damage and regeneration, increased catabolic lipid metabolism, and a progressive change in fur color.
