Mutants show anomalous timing in neurogenesis. Homozygotes for a null allele exhibit premature neurogenesis, severe neural tube defects, supernumerary hair cells in the inner ear, increased numbers of pulmonary neuroendocrine cells, and pancreatic hypoplasia. Death occurs in utero or neonatally.
