Mice homozygous for an error-prone encoding allele exhibit reduced mitochondrial translation and levels of complex IV, and increased polyploid cells in the liver, hepatocyte proliferation, and mitochondiral DNA content. Mice homozygous for a hyper-active encoding allele exhibit reduced mitochondrial translation and dilated cardiomyopathy.
