Mice homozygous for either a knock-out or a gene-trapped allele display a phenotype characterized by postnatal growth retardation, renal hypoplasia, impaired maturation of the ducts in the salivary gland and kidney, abnormal composition of saliva and urine, and postnatal lethality.
