Homozygous inactivation of this gene protects male mice from Coxsackievirus B3-induced myocarditis by enhancing antiviral innate immunity, attenuating inflammation and cardiac damage, and improving cardiac function and survival rates. Primary neonatal cardiomyocytes from mice infected with cardiotropic viruses show reduced ER stress and apoptosis, decreased reactive oxygen species levels, and increased production of type I interferons.
