Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit pronounced behavioral abnormalities, including locomotor hyperactivity, reduced anxiety, and decreased depression-like behavior, an increased striatal dopamine turnover rate, and enhanced behavioral response to methylphenidate.
