The SynTII layer/ chorioallantoic branching is nearly absent, as Gcm1 and MCT4 expression is sparse. Although some endothelial cells and fetal blood cells are detected among labyrinth trophoblasts, discrete fetal blood spaces are noticeably decreased. Maternal blood is observed adjacent to the LZ; however, integrated discrete maternal blood spaces are also reduced. Although MCT1 and MCT4 signals are found in close apposition, the extensive network of adjacent MCT1+ SynTI and MCT4+ SynTII cells observed in controls is absent.
