The red nucleus is still specified in the absence of Shh, although, at E18.5 (B, E), it seems less compacted than in the wild-type. (C, F) Double labeled whole mount in situ hybridization at E12.5 of wild-type and conditional mutant embryo. The arrow in (F) indicates the loss of the mesencephalic Pax6 longitudinal positive band in the mutant. The arrowhead in (D, F) indicates the pretectal longitudinal band of Pax6 is not lost in the conditional mutant. The maintenance of the mesencephalic RN can be detected in the absence of Shh.
