Arrows mark caudal boundary of most recently formed somite. (A-D) Horizontal lines mark tight band of Hes expression; vertical lines mark broader caudal domains. (A-D,G-I) Tail regions are arranged in a hypothetical progression according to the oscillatory expression of Hes1. (G-N) Vertical lines indicate bands/domains of expression.
