• from 5-6 weeks of age, mice show signs of itch with scratching, the frequency of which increases with time
• 73% of mice show signs of itch at 10-11 weeks of age, with varied frequency of scratching

growth/size/body
• 7-10% reduction in weight at 13-14 weeks of age

immune system
• at 3 weeks of age, skin shows a mild cellular inflammatory reaction with mixed leukocytes in the upper dermis
• increase in the number of mast cells in the dermis in some mice at 5 weeks of age
• leukocyte invasion of the epidermis is occasionally seen that then manifests as small groups of granulocytes within the thickened cornified layer, which is parakeratotic at these sites
