• newborn mice exhibit a significantly higher incidence (66.7%) of congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) than heterozygous (10.4%) or wild-type mice (9.3%)
• 82.4% of newborns exhibit renal hypo/dysplasia
• newborns with hydronephrosis show a reduced number of glomeruli
• however, newborns with renal hypo/dysplasia and duplex kidneys show normal glomerulus structure and morphology
• 5.9% of newborns exhibit hydronephrosis, along with decreased numbers of glomeruli and renal tubules
• 82.4% of newborns exhibit renal hypo/dysplasia
• newborns with hydronephrosis show a reduced number of renal tubules
• however, newborns with renal hypo/dysplasia and duplex kidneys show normal renal tubule structure and morphology
• 8.8% of newborns exhibit duplex renal/collecting system
• 2.9% of newborns exhibit vesicoureteral reflux

• in vitro, E11.5 embryonic kidneys show a significantly lower number of ureteric bud (UB) branches than control kidneys after 24, 48, and 72 h in culture
