• sera of mice fail to initiate complement by activating C3 in response to LPS from three different bacteria species

• complement activity is restored when sera is pre-mixed with sera from C3^tm1Hrc mice that lack the C3 enzyme

• there is a delayed activation of C3 in mouse sera when low amounts of CVF factor are added

impaired complement alternative pathway ( J:130108 )

• sera fail to initiate complement to LPS and to erthryocytes from mice that lack the complement inhibitor factor Crry (Cr1l^tm1Hmo mice)
