Find Mice Using the International Mouse Strain Resource (IMSR)
Mouse lines carrying:
Mc5rtm1Cone mutation (1 available); any Mc5r mutation (23 available)
phenotype observed in females
phenotype observed in males
N normal phenotype
endocrine/exocrine glands
• little or no porphyrin synthesis in response to restraint stress

behavior/neurological
• homozygous males are less aggressive and more defensive when paired with wildtype males, however social and nonsocial behaviors are unaltered and levels of aggression and defense are unaltered when paired with gonadectomized opponents or with other homozygous males
• homozygous males exhibit even less aggression and more defense in the dark phase when paired with wildtype males
• aggressive behavior is not elevated in homozygous males during the dark phase as it is in wildtype

homeostasis/metabolism
• core body temperature decreases more during swimming at 32 degrees Celcius and takes a longer time to return to baseline compared to controls
• when challenged with cold air, homozygotes undergo mild hypothermia, while controls increase core temperature and maintain the higher temperature for at least 3 hours

endocrine/exocrine glands
• reduction in sterol esters in sebum
• do not observe melanocortin-stimulated protein secretion as in wildtype
• little or no porphyrin synthesis from Harderian gland

vision/eye
• do not observe melanocortin-stimulated protein secretion as in wildtype

integument
• reduction in sterol esters in sebum
• absorb almost twice as much water as wildtype and need more time for fur to dry after swimming due to impaired water repulsion
• decrease in hair lipid content indicated by a 15-20% reduction in acetone-extractable materials from hair
