• population spike amplitude evoked by minimal stimulation intensity is significantly larger in hippocampal mutant slices compared to wild-type slices with a large increase in cellular excitability and a larger maximal response
• >60% of slices show epileptiform activity following low intensity stimulation compared to <40% of wild-type
• very low concentration kainic acid (KA) stimulation of hippocampal slices produces maximal CA3 population spike amplitude and higher concentrations induces severe epileptiform activity, reducing amplitude of the population response

• increase in brain size due to expansion of allocortex and neocortex
• apical dendrites of pyramidal neurons in cortical layer 2/3 but not layer 5 are longer and more tortuous than in controls
• total arbor length is on average 1.6 mm longer in mutants, indicating an approximate 80% expansion of the apical dendritic tree
• however, basal dendritic length is not different
• rapamycin treatments completely prevent dendritic growth seen following Pten deletion

• female, but not male, mice exhibit reduced preference for a natural reward in sucrose preference tests compared to wild-type mice
• female, but not male, mice exhibit more immobility when placed in swim test than wild-type mice
• unlike wild-type mice, female and male mice do not exhibit any decrease in immobility following administration of desipramine
• male, but not female, mice exhibit increased locomotor activity compared to same sex wild-type mice
• however, activity levels are normal after 4 days of habituation
