immune system
• exhibit about twice as many circulating polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) as wild-type
• peritoneal leukocytes show a 36% decrease in accumulation in an aseptic peritonitis model
• peritoneal macrophages show reduced chemotaxis toward various chemoattractants (endotoxin-activated mouse serum, RANTES, MIP-5, MDC, SDF-1, and C5a, VEGF)
• neutrophils display impaired resipiratory burst and motility
• polymorphonuclear neutrophils show reduced migration toward a wide range of chemotactic stimuli (IL-8, fMLP, C5a)
• 60% fewer polymorphonuclear neutrophils infiltrate subcutaneous air pouches after IL-8 administration
• mutants are unable to clear peritoneal bacteria after administration of sublethal doses of S. aureus, with bacteria concentrations in the abdominal cavity 10x that of wild-type
