Saturable vitamin A (retinol) uptake is impaired in homozygous mutant mice. Serum retinol levels are unaffected when with normal dietary intake, however, pups of homozygous dams fed a marginal retinol diet show increased neonatal lethality due to inadequate retinal transport to the fetus.
