Homozygotes for targeted null mutations exhibit loss of aryl hydrocarbon receptor and hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha gene induction, defective angiogenesis of the yolk sac and branchial arches, placental defects, and lethality by embryonic day 10.5.
