Mice homozygous for a null allele exhibit reduced blood glucose levels under both fasted and fed conditions, insulin resistance in both muscle and liver, decreased energy expenditure and oxygen consumption, abnormal adipocyte and muscle cell glucose uptake, and increased hepatic gluconeogenesis.
