Mice homozygous for a null allele show increased ceramide levels, hair shaft abnormalities, cyclic alopecia, epidermal hyperplasia, sebaceous gland and infundibulum expansion, increased epidermal water loss, and hypermetabolism along with decreased body weight and adipose tissue depots during aging.
