  • Per David Webb This Slc10a4> Zar1>duplication appears to be restricted to M. musculus and M. caroli. I couldn't find a similar duplication in other Mus assemblies (eg, M. pahari, M. spicilegus...) or in the assemblies of Peromyscus maniculatus, beaver or human. The gene order in M. musculus and M. caroli is: Nfxl1< loc> Zar1< Slc10a4ps< Cnga1< Nipal1> Txk< Tec< Slain2> Slc10a4> Zar1ps> Fryl< whereas the following gene order is strongly conserved in all other gnathostomes except teleosts: NFXL1< CNGA1< NIPAL1> TXK< TEC< SLAIN2> SLC10A4> ZAR1> FRYL< So, while the protein coding Zar1 gene (GeneID: 317755, MGI:2180337) of M. musculus isn't strictly the ortholog of the ZAR1 gene in other mammals the difference is trivial since it's restricted to a very small set of Mus-related organisms. The Slc10a4 gene of of M. musculus (GeneID: 231290, MGI:3606480) is a true ortholog of the gene in other mammals.

Ovarian development and oogenesis are normal in homozygous null females; however, they are infertile due to a failure at the oocyte to embryo transition.
