The gene product plays a role in mediating amino-acid-stimulated pancreatic alpha cell proliferation. Under glucagon receptor (Gcgr) inhibition conditions, homozygous KO reduces alpha cell hyperplasia and causes hypoglycemia and increased plasma glucagon and amino acid levels.
