The incompletely penetrant homozygous phenotype of a splice-site mutation may include retinal epithelium expansion over the dorsal half of the eye, exencephaly, spina bifida, gastrulation defects and/or aberrant somite and mesoderm development. A few mutants survive postnatally and appear normal.
