Mice homozygous for a floxed allele activated in cortical neuron exhibit loss of cortex neurons due to premature differentiation and increased apoptosis. These mice also exhibit behavioral defects but are otherwise viable and fertile. Heterozygous mice exhibit an intermediate phenotype.
