Mice homozygous for a spontaneous mutation show a hyperplastic, hyperkeratotic epidermis, abnormally large mitochondria, absent lamellar granules, excessive epidermal and hair follicle cornification, increased transepidermal water loss and postnatal death, probably due to dehydration.
