Mice homozygous for a null mutation show decreased pancreatic beta cell mass, hyperglycemia, hypoinsulinemia, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance and impaired glucose uptake. Homozygous females show decreased susceptibility to diet-induced obesity and a thin hypodermal fat layer.
