Mice homozygous for a knock-out allele exhibit complete embryonic lethality prior to organogenesis. Although blastocysts hatch from the zona pellucida with apparent trophectoderm and primitive endoderm cells, inner cell mass and epiblast cells form smaller outgrowth colonies.
