Homozygotes for a null allele show an enlarged tectorial membrane with a disrupted striated-sheet matrix, absence of the marginal band, and low-frequency hearing loss. However, basilar-membrane and neural tuning are both enhanced in high-frequency cochlear regions, with little loss in sensitivity.
