Homozygotes for a null allele display partial postnatal lethality; survivors are small and show lower luminal Cl-/HCO3- exchange activity, acidic chloridorrhea, volume depletion, upregulation of ion transporters, dilated colons, higher crypt proliferation and plasma aldosterone, and premature death.
