phenotype observed in females

N normal phenotype
endocrine/exocrine glands
• progressive weight reduction after 5 months of age, resulting in weights 10% those of normal at 14 months of age
• tubules are devoid of germ cells by 6 months of age
• by 8 months of age most sertoli cells had sloughed off and there was reduction in the number of leydig cells

nervous system
• mitochondria lengths in Purkinje cells are 1.4-1.5 um, compared to lengths of 0.8-1.0 um in wild-type animals
• often, points where mitochondria become constricted are observed in mutants but not in wild-type mitochondria, suggestive of impaired fission
• large numbers of naked dendritic spines are present
• mismatched connections between pre- and postsynaptic active zones of Purkinje cell/parallel fiber synapses are frequently seen
• other synaptic defects such as shortened active zones and thickened postsynaptic densities

behavior/neurological
• mice fail to improve performance in rotating rod trials in contrast to wild-type animals

reproductive system
• degenerating spermatocytes are first observed at 19 days of age
• 10-fold decrease in the number of spermatids by 24 days of age
• all stages of developing germ cells were observed at 2.5 months of age, though most were lost by 5 months of age
• progressive weight reduction after 5 months of age, resulting in weights 10% those of normal at 14 months of age
• tubules are devoid of germ cells by 6 months of age
• by 8 months of age most sertoli cells had sloughed off and there was reduction in the number of leydig cells

homeostasis/metabolism
• increased levels observed between 2.5 and 15 months of age
