• homozygous mutants die within 1 day of birth

• from E11.5 - E12.5 the cellularity of homozygous mutant fetal livers is about 50% that of wild-type this difference is gone by E13.5
• in culture erythroid progenitors from homozygous mutants do not increase in number and produce disproportionately more mature erythroid cells compared to cells from wild-type mice
• myeloid lineage cells are absent from the fetal liver of homozygous mutants
• at E12.5 fetal livers from homozygous mutants contain fewer mature erythroid cells
• by E15.5 however the number of mature erythroid cells is significantly higher in homozygous mutant fetal livers
• B-lineage cells are absent from the fetal liver of homozygous mutants

• 4 and 5 days after induced erythrocyte lysis spleens from heterozygous mice contain more mature precursors (CFU-Es) and mature erythroid (TER119+) cells
• prior to lysis no difference in cell numbers is detected
