C57BL/10 and the B10 congenic strains (B10.A, B10.A(1R), B10.A(2R), B10.A(5R), B10.A(15R) and B10.A(18R)) were used to position Aecp on mouse Chromosome 17 in the H2-S to H2-D interval. Using these congenics, Aecp was further shown to be distal to H2-Eb1and C4 and proximal to D17Boy1 (B144). When fed the vitamin A supplemented diet (400 IU/day) during pregnancy, strains C57BL/10 and B10.A(18R) exhibit significantly increased incidence of cleft lip. The H2b allele (C57BL/10-like) appears to be associated with sensitivity to vitamin A induced cleft lip while the H2d and H2k alleles appear to be associated with resistance. Congenic strain B10.A(18R) carries the d allele at H2-S and the b allele at H2-D1, and is believed to carry the b allele at Aecp.
