The adrenal X-zone degenerates by 60 to 70 days of age in animals from inbred strain BALB/cBy while the adrenal X-zone of inbred strain C57BL/6By persists at this time point. The strain distribution pattern of adrenal X-zone degeneration in 7 CXB (C=BALB/c;B=C57BL/6) recombinant inbred (RI) strains mapped a locus named Exz1 (adrenal X zone degeneration 1) to mouse Chromosome 16. The Exz1 locus may be linked to Ly7 at 27.7 cM.

A second locus named Exz2 (adrenal X zone degeneration 2) is thought to reside on mouse Chromosome 12. The strain distribution pattern of Exz2 matches that of Serpina1 (previously named Pre-1) at 51 cM.

BALB/c-derived alleles at Exz1 and Exz2 appear to confer earlier X-zone degeneration with a dominant mode of inheritance.
