789 polymorphic markers were analyzed in 23 SMXA (SM=SM/J; A=A/J) recombinant inbred (RI) strains to identify QTL associated with circadian rhythm and wheel running patterns. Parental strain SM/J exhibits increased 12:12 light-dark and dark-dark activitycompared to A/J and starts wheel running 3 hours before the dark cycle. Parental strain A/J starts wheel running close to the beginning of the dark cycle. Several suggestive loci were identified.

Linkage to free running period (tau) mapped to 12 cM on mouse Chromosome 18 near D18Mit34 (LOD=2.76) and 66 cM on mouse Chromosome 7 near D7Mit10 (LOD=2.18)

Linkage to phase relationship (psi) between light-dark cycles and activity rhythms mapped to 60 cM on mouse Chromosome 7 near D7Rik104 (LOD=2.08). The tyrosinase gene, Tyr (44 cM), maps near this region and may be a possible candidate gene.

Linkage to light-dark activity mapped to central mouse Chromosome 1 near D1Rik136 (LOD=2.61) and telomeric mouse Chromosome 17 near D17Rik98 (LOD=2.67).
