Notes
  • Experiment
400 polymorphic markers were screened in 21 SMXA (SM/J x A/J) recombinant inbred (RI) strains to identify QTLs associated with mandible size. Parental strain SM/J has a small mandible compared to parental strain A/J. Two significant QTLs, Mndl1 and Mndl2, mapped to 13 cM and 16 cM on mouse Chromosome 11, respectively. Mndl1 gives peak linkage between markers D11Mit152 and Hba with LOD>4.0. SM/J-derived alleles confer small mandible size at Mndl1 and a candidate gene mapping to the region is Otx1. Mndl2 gives peak linkage between markers D11Mit229 and D11Mit163 with LOD>4.0. A/J-derived alleles confer increased mandible size at Mndl2. A suggestive locus mapped to 60 cM on mouse Chromosome 10 with LOD>2.2 between D10Mit70 and D10Mit136. A/J-derived allelesare associated with small mandibles while SM/J-derived alleles are associated with large mandibles at this locus.
