26 BXD recombinant inbred (RI) strains and 12 BXH REI strains (B = C57BL/6J, D = DBA/2J, H = C3H/HeJ) were screened for loci associated with hemopoietic S-phase cell cycling using a mapping panel. C57BL/6J progenitor strain tends to have lower cell cycling times and longer life span whereas progenitor strains DBA/2J and C3H/HeJ tend to have higher cell cycling times and shorter life spans. Scpro1 (stem cell proliferation) and Scpro2, mapped to mouse chromosome 7 at 6 cM (LOD = 3.4 at D7Ncvs38) and mouse chromosome 11 at 31 cM (LOD = 3.2 at D11Ncvs76), respectively, in the BXD RI strains and were confirmed in the BXH RI strains. DBA/2J-derived alleles at Scpro1 and Scpro2 predisposed animals to 25% shorter life spans and higher cell cycling. Scpro3, a locus associated with cell cycling mapped to mouse chromosome 10 at 60 cM (LOD = 3.7 at Iapls2-37 which is in mouse Chr 9.) in the BXH RI strains and is located near the Kit1 gene.
