The BALB/cByJ mice show abnormal cold sensitivity as compared with the control C57BL/6J mice. The authors analyzed the linkage of the cold sensitivity phenotype using 130 progeny from the (BALB/cByJ x C57BL/6J) intercross and [(BALB/cByJ x C57BL/6J)F1 x BALB/cByJ] backcross and mapped the phenotype to a 14 cM region between 54 cM and 68 cM on mouse Chromosome 5. The phenotype appeared to be the result of a mutation to a single gene. Using recombination data and expression anaysis of candidate genes in this region, the authors identified a mutation in the Acads gene in the BALB/cByJ leading to the cold sensitivity phenotype. The mutation has been characterized as a deletion of 278 bp near the 3' end that causes abnormal splicing. No protein of biological activity can be detected in the mutant mice.
