Caption E8.5 Rprd2em1(IMPC)J/Rprd2em1(IMPC)J (Rprd2-/-) embryos appear relatively normal but are often delayed compared to controls. Most E9.5 Rprd2-/- embryos are delayed, some more severely than others, most are not turned or display incomplete turning, however because of the severe delay is not always counted. Approximately half of E9.5 Rprd2-/- display mild caudal neural tube kinks. Almost all display abnormal head shape and also display incomplete cranial neural tube closure, which may also be due to the delay. Many display abnormal heart morphology and a minority of those with intact yolk sacs after dissection have abnormal yolk sacs. A few Rprd2-/- embryos at both E8.5 and 9.5 have a circular tissue above their head folds (as is the case for the younger E8.5 mutant in the image) which appears to result from inappropriate resolution of the amnionic cavity.
