At E9.5, Ppox^em1(IMPC)J/Ppox^em1(IMPC)J (Ppox-/-) placentas exhibit a diminished Tpbpa+ spongiotrophoblast layer, abnormal chorioallantoic interface (reduction in allantoic mesoderm and limited interface expansion), and multiple labyrinth zone defects when compared to controls. The Tfeb+ region fails to expand, remaining a thin layer, and Gcm1+ chorioallantoic branching is severely impaired. By E10.5, Ppox-/- placentas show a more severe manifestation of the E9.5 defects.
