Image
Caption At E8.5, Ppoxem1(IMPC)J/Ppoxem1(IMPC)J (Ppox-/-) mutants can be distinguished by an abnormal allantois that appears blebby and sometimes is branched. The mutant embryos are always small for the litter and sometimes delayed and their heads almost always abnormally shaped. By E9.5 Ppox-/- all display abnormal heads and the cranial neural tube is almost always open, all mutant embryos are unturned and all display caudal neural tube kinks. Cardiac development is also impaired. The allantois is sometime retracted and balled up, as in this E9.5 Ppox-/- embryo, but can also be found tenuously attached to the placenta.
