Caption E8.5 germ layer lineage patterning and histology in Chp1em1(IMPC)Tcp/Chp1em1(IMPC)Tcp (Chp1 -/-) mice. These littermates were stained with Ecad (green) to identify epithelium, including the visceral endoderm of the yolk sac and the embryonic endoderm. Ncad, which was used to label mesodermal derivatives including the developing cardiac tissue and the allantois (see Chp1 -/+ control). No Ncad staining is observed in this mutant nor in any of the other similarly delayed E8.5 Chp1 -/- mutants examined by IF (n=3). Oct4, a pluripotentcy marker, is normally present in the primitive streak and nascent mesoderm at E7.5. The E8.5 Chp1 -/-, which is delayed, has Oct4 in the remnant of the primitive streak and nascent mesodermal layer (right section), while the E8.5 control embryo, as expected, does not.
