A: 12 somites, A' is an enlargement of the portion indicated in A; B: 14 somites; C: 17 somites; D: 15 somites; E-G: serial sections - 28 somites (day 11) caudal to cranial; H: 28 somites; I-K: serial sections - 44 somites (day 12) caudal to cranial; L: 38 somites; M: day 14; N: day 16. Open arrowheads indicate endocardium, filled arrowheads compact myocardium. Filled arrowhead in C indicates the beginning of expression in the right atrial appendage. Filled arrowheads in F, G, I indicate weak expression in compact myocardium. Fingers in H, K, L indicate cranial extent of trabeculation and expression.
