High magnification fluorescent images of the pharyngeal arch region of E9.5-10.5 DAPI stained (a) wild-type and (b) Rdh10^trex/Rdh10^trex (trex) embryos. Arrowheads illustrate the abnormal size and shape of individual pharyngeal arches in each of the mutants identified in our screen. The third arch in mutants is severely reduced in size leaving only a rudimentary structure, which is fused distally with the second arch. Mutants also show complete agenesis of the 4th pharyngeal arch.
