| Caption | Double stranded break (DSB) repair in Spo11tm1.1Gvpc/Spo11tm1.1Gvpc (Spo11Gal/Gal)) spermatocytes is incomplete. Chromosomal spreads from earlier (zygotene) and later (pachytene) stage spermatocytes were immunostained with antibodies to gamma-H2AX (red) and SCP3 (green). Note the disappearance of gamma-H2AX staining at homologously synapsed autosomes in later stage wild-type (WT) and Spo11tm1.1Gvpc/Spo11tm1.1Gvpc spermatocytes consistent with proper repair of DSBs. gamma-H2AX persist in Spo11tm1.1Gvpc/Spo11tm3Rdco (Spo11Gal/-) spermatocytes and on asynapsed chromosomes in Spo11tm1.1Gvpc/Spo11tm1.1Gvpc spermatocytes. Sex body (white arrow) is evident in WT, but not Spo11tm1.1Gvpc/Spo11tm1.1Gvpc spermatocytes. | ||||||
